When I went to bed last night I thought it would be great to just sleep in for a change.  We know absolutely no one here so there would be no visitors and no need to talk to anyone at all.  WRONG!!
I heard my text message ring on the phone and when I looked at my watch it was 6 a.m.!!  What the hell!!!
It was my sister Jan asking if we were headed home yet.  6 O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING!!!!!   There is obviously no rest for the wicked!!
The sun is shining but,  like I mentioned yesterday, it is much chillier here.  Hogan was out for a perimeter check and was busy watching the birds.  We did not see any four legged wildlife yesterday and as I look out the windows this morning, there is nothing stirring.  There are tons of elk and deer tracks in the meadow though - even dog prints which I assume are coyote as they are relatively small.  Maybe today we will be blessed with some of nature's creatures.
Jace skyped us this morning and I had a good chat with him.  He has decided to go work back on the farm for the Spring and seems happy about it.  There is lots of water out there but so far they are not too worried about it.  The ground is still frozen and much of the water is still running so hopefully the fields will dry and the seeding can begin in a few weeks.
Hogan and I went for a hike this morning.  We wanted to see what was over the hill so off we went.  I was surprised to see so much rock on the ground as I had assumed that I would be hiking forest floor.  Instead, I found myself walking on very rocky ground.  It was nice though, not to have to worry about the ever present danger from rattlesnakes.  Although I have no doubt that they may very well live in this forest, it is still a bit chilly for them at this elevation.  I did however see a cute little colorful lizard that managed to scurry away before I was able to get his picture!!  So .... where there are lizards, there are rattlesnakes.
There were several varieties of wild flowers in bloom and I did see some small globe type cactus.  Wow, where else are you going to find cactus in the forest!!
The trees in this area are huge.  Some, as you can see by the pics,  are about 2-3 feet in diameter.  I found one that had been cut and had Hogan sit on it for some pics.  As we continued our walk, we found a cute little pond and of course I could not resist - I had to throw some sticks in and have Hogan swim to get them.  He seemed to enjoy the swim!!
Once back at camp, I had to sit and rest as once again, I am up in these higher elevations and am having trouble breathing.  I remember last year,  and this "air hunger" has certainly not changed.
We had a lovely campfire tonight with actual pine wood.  It was great and smelled wonderful.  There are only a bazillion pine cones on the ground and they burn incredibly well also.
The stars were out in full force and once the moon finally rose above the tree line, the view was incredible.
We will be heading further North tomorrow and I am glad we took this day to just sit and relax and take in all the wonders of this forest.  We heard the coyotes tonight and although we did not see them, it sure was nice to hear them.  Hogan was a little bugged by their sounds and did not wander too far from the fire.
It was then time for supper and bed ..... travel day tomorrow.
