Headed out
I was lying in bed this morning and could hear little "pellets" hitting the top of the camper and immediately thought - Shit, Oh Dear..... SLEET!!  We knew there was a possibility of snow catching up to us but I really was hoping not to see any of it!!
When I finally did get up, I saw a fine dusting of snow covering the ground.  I was not totally impressed and to add insult to injury......the damn fridge had not miraculously started during the night!!  Holy Buckets!!
The temperature had fallen and I noted that the water pump was a bit sluggish and that is definitely not a good sign.  I quickly ran some hot water through it and after a quick breakfast and showers, we packed up and headed for what we hoped would be warmer weather!!  We needed to get over the mountains and through a few passes in Colorado in order to get to the lower elevations and heat!!
With that in mind, we headed towards Colorado and I had my fingers crossed that the mountain passes were going to be dry.

She almost got it, Welcome to Colorado
Once we crossed into the State of Colorado the beauty factor and scenery quotient went up on the scale!!  Boring is definitely not a word to be used to describe Colorado and it was quite a pleasure to travel the roads we did today.  The weather was cooperating and there was absolutely no snow on the roads at all.  Not even in the upper elevations and I somehow got the impression that John was a bit disappointed by that.  Not that there was no snow on the roads, but that there was no snow anywhere to really speak of.   There was one spot where there was a bit but even that was minimal.

Right it is

God damn road signs again.......they are going to be the death of me!!

Coming into Walden Colorado
We tend to travel the back roads, staying off the Interstate Highways when we can (unless we need to out run some nasty weather or make up time) and that affords us the opportunity to see some older towns and architecture.  It is really quite impressive how small town America seems to be thriving in the middle of nowhere or along the mountain tops and passes.
Once again, we were in and out of cell service today.  Too bad the camera didn't work when we were out of service because then I wouldn't have to worry about taking pictures of John's God damn road signs!!

Beautiful old building in this quaint little town

The camera didn't really capture the incredible color of these willows

A bit of snow along the edge of the road in Gore Pass

Almost 10,000 feet at the summit

We wound our way over, through, between and beside the various hills, mountains and passes and finally found ourselves on final descent to the lower elevations along Interstate 70.  We had seen some pretty incredible scenery and that is always a good thing.  The Colorado River meandered alongside the road at a few points today and we got to see several fisherman in their "funny" shaped boats trying their hand at catching tonight's supper.  I hoped that they were successful but the water looked a little choppy at times.

Our spot for the night
As we got to the lower elevations, the cell service returned and we were able to "google" a nearby campground for the night.   There was a cute little recreation area just outside of the Town of Gypsum, Colorado so we decide to call it a day, enjoy some of the much warmer temperatures and watch the Monday Night Football game.  The only undesirable thing about this particular site is that it was situated just off the Interstate so the noise factor was definitely not ideal.  Oh well, it was just for the night and we would be inside anyway!!
The campground was another U.S. Forest Service Campground and for the cost of $10.00 dollars, we could stay the night AND dump the garbage!!  Now that alone is worth the price of admission!!

On the Eagle River
Booko had yet another spot to check out all the sights and smells and was soon running around like an idiot.  It was a bit windy for a fire but, it was warm so no fire really needed and that was a good thing!!  We had a football game to watch anyway.
As it turned out, my team lost and with that the hopes of winning the 90 bucks from the football pool.  Looks like it is going to have to happen in the upcoming week!!
Supper was simple fair - good old KD and sausage with a coleslaw side salad.  Nothing fancy but filling and good enough for tonight.
I quickly got the supper dishes done (still had some from the previous night),  bagged up the garbage and set it outside to get it out of the way.  John did advise me to make sure that I got it off the ground and put it onto the truck or up on the propane tanks to discourage any creatures that may want to investigate during the night.   I chose to put it up on the propane tanks just to be safe then headed to bed.   Life is Good!!

I woke up this morning to sunshine and blue skies.  I should have been happy with that little tidbit of information but oh no, I had to actually check the Accuweather App on the phone.  Some people are never happy with just looking out the window and enjoying the moment!!
A Severe Weather Alert has been issued for this area with high winds bringing in a cold front with rain and snow with accumulations of snow between 1 and 3 inches in some areas!!  Holy Buckets!!   That is not good and sounds like we need to be making some miles today to outrun this corruption!!
I wasn't up for more than an hour before the wind came up and I had to turn on the power so that I could put the satellite dish down so that it wouldn't blow off the top of the camper!!
John was up and we were headed down the road by 10:00 a.m.  Yes, that's right, 10:00 a.m.!!
The wind was blowing like crazy but at one point we actually had a tail wind!!  Of course that didn't last very long!!
Eventually, after miles and miles of more boring scenery, we managed to get out of the impending weather system and much further into the Southern part of Wyoming.
We passed a few interesting things along the way.  One of these was a huge "wind garden" where there were tons of wind turbines situated along the highway on the hills to catch the "ever blowing" wind and harness its energy.  It was pretty cool to see the numerous arms of the tall turbines slowly spinning around and around on their endless  360 degree journey.

Headed out - bad weather coming in

The best scenery of today!!

John and his damn road signs!!   Who cares about road signs??

More wind power - all arms turning

Boring!

We called it a day after several miles of travel at a U.S. Forest Service campground.  It was a self pay station (as they often are) but the Forest Service had closed it for the season by taping up the pay envelopes and the deposit cylinder.  Bonus!!  Free Camping tonight!!  There was no gate to the area and we were thinking it was because it is also a fishing access to the North Platte River.  It worked out well though as we found a cute little spot that overlooked the surrounding hills and forest.  It was the nicest scenery of the day so it did indeed work
out well.
The sun was shining when we arrived but there was a bit of wind but we used the slide out on the trailer initially to block it while enjoying what remained of the sunshine.
We noted that the fridge was flashing "check gas" and decided that we were probably out of propane so John switched the tanks over to the full one and tried to relight the fridge.  Of course it was not going to cooperate and after more than several tries decided that perhaps the fridge was not functioning properly and that was just a headache we didn't want or need.  We tried in vane for the rest of the evening but to no avail.  Good Grief!!
Booko was busy checking out all the new smells and running around like an idiot.   Man, he runs hell bent for leather and if he is headed towards you....well, it could get ugly.  You have to be on your toes to direct him away from your legs!!  He truly can be quite an idiot!!

6 Mile Gap Road, which is only 2 miles long!!

Our spot for the night - a US Forest Fee Campground
While John and I were sitting in the sunshine, enjoying the view and thanking our lucky stars that we had not had any "weather" issues today, several deer wandered through the campground.  They were far enough away that Booko (our great protector) didn't even notice them.  In his defense though, the wind was blowing the wrong way for him to smell them!!  He was busy laying in his bed on the ground in front of us after his speed runs up and down the nearby hills!!
While we were sitting there, a small bird (I'm thinking Sparrow) flew up to us, landed on my lap then jumped up onto my hand!!  He was a bit curious as to what we were doing in his neck of the woods!! He didn't stay for long but it was quite a "Kodak" moment and of course.....our phone was in the trailer as there was "no service" in this area.
There was actually no service for most of the day so that tells you right there just how remote and desolate some of this State really is.

Sitting just above the Platte River
As the sun waned, John got the campfire in a can out to take the chill off and managed to find a few chunks of what I presumed was cottonwood as it had huge grooves in its very thick bark so cottonwood came to mind.  They were heavy chunks but the propane powered fireplace soon had them burning and throwing some good heat and once again, life was good!!
Booko, after his little afternoon rest in the sun, was busy running around again.  You always knew he was coming back into camp as he was full speed ahead and his tags on his collar where banging against each other.  Man, if only I had his kind of energy!!

Getting the fire going

Marie breaking the wind with her umbrella ella
It was a nice evening but it was soon time to head into the camper to watch the football game and almost time for John to start supper.  I had already wrapped the potatoes for baking so my job was pretty much done in that regard!!
It was nice to just sit and chill and not have to worry about weather or icy roads or anything!! The beer wasn't as cold as it should have been (damn fridge) but all in all........ Life is Good!

Another awesome evening

Saturday, October 28/2017

The sun is shining this morning but there is a definite chill in the air!!  It is quiet here in this little campground so one gets to really enjoy the different bird sounds that seem to abound around here.
Booko is outside running around like a goof burning off energy so he will be ready to get into his cage and just sleep!!
We headed down the road and today's trip proved to be one of the most boring and longest days to date!!  We travelled through miles and  miles of sheer nothingness (and I don't even know if that is a word!!).  Miles and miles and miles of grasslands with the occasional break for a few trees interspersed amongst the occasional hill!!   And, miles and miles of snow fence.  I am thinking that this stretch of Montana gets an incredible amount of snow!! Campgrounds or any site that one can set up camp for the night are few and far between!!
We eventually found a rather dubious area just outside of Midland, Wyoming that looked to be a ball diamond at one point but as we turned into the area, we were met by a sign that said that this area was an active oil field!!  There were warnings about dangerous gases and what not but I thought with it being this close to the highway, the gases couldn't be much of an issue so we parked thanking our lucky stars that we did not have to travel any further tonight!!
It was not a stellar day!!  We did however see a ton of deer and antelope that call this part of Wyoming home.  They seem quite content to live out their lives amongst the numerous and I mean numerous oil wells and derricks that have invaded their lands.
Supper was nothing spectacular - liver and onions, mashed potatoes and cream corn.  It hit the spot and then I made the bed and crawled in to continue reading my book.
John made some smart ass comment about me going to be so early but I just didn't care.  I was tired and crawling into bed suited me just fine!!
