Monday, August 29/2011

I had a lousy sleep last night.  My knees were aching so bad I had to get up and rub them with some sort of "snake" oil in the hopes that they would stop aching and I could get back to sleep.  I popped more tylenol (I am sure my liver is really mad at me, not to mention my kidneys!!) but eventually did get a bit of sleep.  Perhaps riding my own quad is not such a good idea anymore.  I will have to think on this some more.  I may have to ride Shirley's quad again just to see if I get the same results although, I am not looking forward to another sleepless night if that is the outcome!!
This morning, I am still a bit sore (used some more "snake" oil) but the constant ache is gone so that is a good thing.
I washed a few loads of clothes and pinned them out on the line for the sun to do its thing.   I thought about doing the grass and I actually thought about cleaning the windows - Yea, that's right - I haven't done that yet either!!
Thankfully, Shirley dropped over for a visit and saved me from doing anything!!  Life is tough.

Sunday, August 28/2011

I am up early and notice that it must have rained during the night although I did not hear and thing!!  Hmmm!!  I noticed that Shirley was on-line so we chatted over a cup of coffee and that was rather fun.  Neither Dave nor John were up yet so we had some "girl" time!!
I must wash the outside of the windows today.  They are filthy and it is past time for them to be done.  I should also figure out how the blinds come off the windows so that they too can be washed.  I think I will start on the small bathroom blind just in case I break something.  I'd rather it be a small blind and not one of the big ones in the front of the bus.  Wish me luck!!

I procrastinated long enough with cleaning the windows so they never did get done.  Instead, we loaded the quad and hooked up with Dave and Shirley to go for a ride.  Now, what would you rather do - clean windows and blinds or go quadding.
We headed down into "the block" and had a riot.  We saw some of the biggest wolf tracks I had ever seen and that was rather fascinating and, we once again introduced Dave to more trails he had yet to travel,  eventually ending up at the south end of Otter Lake.  It is an awesome and remote site for someone who wishes to fish and camp and be totally undisturbed.  While Shirley and I were down at the lake's edge, a fish jumped - almost like he was mocking us for not having our fishing rods with us!!  Damn Fish!!
We spent the day in the forest eventually swapping quads so the Dave and Shirley were on ours and John and I each took one of theirs.  It was a riot and I enjoyed riding Shirley quad only once managing to get stuck in a deep mud puddle!!  Well, not actually stuck, as I was able to back my way out of it but not before I got my feet wet!!  It felt good to be riding my own quad and I must say that my tailbone appreciated the change as well!!  I was able to stand through some of the rough spots and that was great.
We finally got out of the block and at the cattle gate.  We had made good time but it was getting later in the day and we still wanted to see if we could make it through another trail to eventually hook up to the North Grid and head back into town that way.
Because we were going to be doing some road riding, I decided to put on my raincoat to cut some of the wind that we would be experiencing.  I went to get it out of the storage box only to discover that it was not there!!  Now where the hell did it go?  I could not remember taking it out but obviously I had.  Dave "kind of" remembered seeing me take it out but not sure where.  Either way, we had to go back and find it as I had put the cell phone in the pocket.  Oh Brother - I can't believe I lost my jacket!!
It  was 8:00 p.m. when we were headed back into the block on our search mission.  Thankfully, it was not too terribly far back  - just after the gate at Slide Out (which actually if far enough back when one is back tracking).  What I think happened is that I forgot to latch the box closed and the jacket fell out, being dragged for a ways as it was totally covered in mud.  Dave and Shirley were riding behind John and I so no one noticed they were dragging my coat, which eventually fell off the quad completely.
Since we were by the Heart Lake turnoff, we scooted down that trail for a beer and enjoy the beauty of this little lake.  The last beer in the block for tonight.
Since we had to make the unexpected return trip tonight, we put the other trail on hold and just headed home.  I guess we will leave that trail for another day.
By the time we made it back to the bus, it was 10:00 o'clock and the chicken I had put into the slow cooker before we had left was certainly cooked.   Hogan was glad to see us and I was happy to be home.  I was tired.
With a few potatoes quickly thrown into a pot and cooked a can of vegetables opened, we ate supper and relaxed for a bit before I headed into the shower to wash the dust and grime off  before collapsing into the bed.  My knees were aching and I feared that I would pay a price for riding Shirley's quad for as long as I did.   Good Night!!

Saturday, August 27/2011

Well I looked at the left over beet juice this morning and said "ah,what the hell".  I  might just as well get another pot of beets going and use the left over juice.  So, out to the garden I go and come back in with enough beets for the final and I mean final batch of pickled beets.
It looks like it is going to be another nice day today and I really should cut the grass.  Of course with that new property, we now have even more grass to cut.  Great!!  Jace and Kim are coming up next weekend but I do not think I can look at messy long grass for another week!!
The last of the beets are done.  The left over juice is all used up and I am now officially done with beets.
I started cleaning the trailer a bit today although I did take time to watch the funeral service for Jack Layton (leader of the opposition party here in Canada)  who passed away earlier this week from cancer.
The funeral was incredible.  It was a State Funeral which in itself is unheard of for the leader of the opposition but I guess this tells us just what an incredible man he was and how the country felt about him that they would bestow this kind of an honor on him.  The sermon itself was touching and powerful and I am so glad that I took the time to watch it.
Gary has been fixing his quad now for a few days and has now got things all done.  He has taken it around town a few times and now thinks that it is ready for the trails.  He has decided to take a salt block out to the forest where he too is hoping to lure the deer in during hunting season.  John asked him which way he was headed "just in case".  That  proved to be a very good question because not too long after he left, we go a call from him  asking us to come and get him as his quad  had broken down.  Now that can't be good.
John headed down the road and found him sitting on his running board  with what I am sure was a rather defeated, dejected look on his face.  No one should have this kind of bad luck.  John doubled Gary home who then got his truck and trailer ready and headed back to the quad where he loaded it and brought it home.
Dave and Shirley, who had left for a birthday party for one of their grandchildren,  returned - much to our surprise.  They sure weren't gone long and we soon found out why.  Apparently the alternator went in their truck so they never even made it to the party.  They returned with very little juice left in the battery.  They got back in time to help us push Gary's quad off the trailer and into the garage.
While the guys were trying to diagnose the issues with Gary's quad while sitting here in the yard having a beer, Gary got a phone call from his ex-wife saying that their daughter had been involved in a car accident and was on her way to the hospital.   It took an hour before Gary found out that his daughter was going to be okay.   This is a scary reality we, as parent have to be prepared for and deal with.  With our children living their own lives and not in the same area as we are, this is always a possibility.   We can do nothing more than put good vibes out into the universe and hope for the best.
Dave decided he wanted to go for a trail ride to see if he can see any deer.  Apparently, Shirley and him saw a few young bucks back in the bush a few days ago and he wanted to check them out again.  With the four of us sitting in their Ford Explorer, we headed onto the trails.  We did see some deer although I don't think they were the ones Dave was looking for.  It was good to be out in the trails again and we did take a bit of a detour which ended up in a big mud hole that none of us were anxious to take on as we did not have a winch on the truck,  Instead, we turned around vowing to return to this trail on the quads.
Back at home, it was time for a campfire while John cooked supper.  It was awesome as usual and a good way to finish the day.

Friday, August 26/2011

I awoke early this morning and it is a bit cool in the bus.  That is a good thing because once I get those beets boiling, the temperature in here will definitely go up.  I want to do some for both Gary and my sister today and am hoping to have most of it done before John get up.
Gary was up early so,  I went over there to get a few jars from him.  He was in Saskatoon yesterday to pick up quad parts and is now busy putting his quad back together.
Well the beets are done and the mess has been cleaned up so now I can relax and enjoy the rest of the day.  I have enough beet juice left over for another couple of jars so I will see how energetic I feel tomorrow morning.  It would be nice to use up what is left and then not have to think about beets again this year - unless it involves the eating of them!!
Gary came over for a visit today.  He has been busy fixing the front end of his quad.  When he finally got it put together and took it for a test run,  he realized that it had issues with the clutch so now has that apart and is cleaning it up hoping that a little cleaning is all it needs.  Hunting season is just around the corner so he is wanting to get everything in good working order before he  is out in the forest all alone.  With Gary's luck, he could easily find himself with a dead deer and a dead quad!!  Hope he carries extra bullets - just in case!!
We watched the football game tonight then had supper. We spent the rest of the evening just chillin -  me watching TV and reading and John watching TV and being on the internet.

Thursday, August 25/2011

It tried to rain a bit early this morning.  The drops sounded rather large but thankfully there weren't many of them.  When I finally did get out of bed, the sun was shining and the blue jay was sitting on the ground below the bird feeder eating all the seeds that the little birds drop.  They are very messy little creatures!!
Today I think I will pickle some beets.  I have been thinking of this for a few days now so probably should stop thinking and start doing!!
I got a call from staffing and now have lots of shifts booked for September and October so am quite pleased about that.  That should give our "Arizona play money" a bit of a boost!!
I got the beets done.  I only did 4 quarts up today so will do more tomorrow.  I promised to do some up for Gary so will get those out of the way tomorrow as well.  I really should do some for my sister Jan.  Her family loves them.  I only have room here in the bus for a few jars so I have to give the rest away.  Shirley, from across the street, has been picking some also and there are still several left  in the rows.  Oh, I am sure they will not go to waste - borscht is always an option!!
When I was done with the beets, I headed back into the garden to do some much needed cleaning.  The tomatoes resembled a small hedge so I was pruning those like a mad woman.  Now Dave had lots of garden refuse for his deer!!  Shirley had planted some cabbage and cauliflower this spring and the cabbage butterflies had a feast on them so I pulled those up and added them to "Dave's" pile.
When Shirley got home from work, we loaded up Gary's little quad trailer with the garden stuff and we climbed onto the quads and head to Dave's deer bait areas in the forest.  We only had two "bars" indicating our low fuel but were assured that  we had plenty (we will re-think that one later!!).
Down the road we go and off into the forest.   What an awesome little ride.  The evening was lovely and the peaceful quiet of the forest was more than welcome.  What an incredible back yard we have.  No wonder there are so many happy fat deer around here.
Last week, when Dave and Shirley were here delivering garden refuse, they saw a huge black bear on the trail and they suspected that he too was chowing down on the garden bounty which,  is not really what is wanted.  Hey, bears have to eat too!!   Dave said he probably weighed in at around 450 pounds so he certainly was a good size.   Tonight, however, we did not see any bears and although Dave saw 4 deer, we, being at the back of the line, did not see any.  The first quad usually scares everything off the trail so by the time the last quad comes by, the woodland creatures are long gone!!
We delivered to two sites then decided to stop for a refreshment at Bear Lake (appropriate name considering the amount of bear scat we see on the trail!!).  Dave says he has seen otters in this lake and osprey flying over which almost certainly says there are fish in this lake.  Apparently it was once stocked with trout and supposedly netted out however, there are definite boat launch tracks near the edge of the water and I suspect they were not camera buffs hoping for that one special shot!!  I bet who ever it was had fishing rods!!  I think we will have to bring Dave's little boat down here and cast a few lines.
We headed back towards home after the lake, stopping to pick up the occasional log for the campfire.  I even took a turn as the driver and I must admit, I loved it.  John thought that I had rearranged several of his vertebrae, but I think he was only being a baby!!  Once back at the grid, we stopped for a final refreshment, wondered about the gas situation and then headed towards home.  We almost made it!!  Although the quad said we still had one bar left - it obviously lied!!  It was now dark and John and I were sitting in the ditch  with no gas!!  Lesson learned - fill the damn gas tank before we leave for the trails.  Shirley had been running in front of us and once she no longer saw our lights, turned around and came to our rescue.  She carried a gallon of gas in her quad and once we poured that gallon into our tank, we were ready to go again.  Thanks Shirley!!  It is VERY dark and quiet out there when one is all by themselves --- I kept wanting to say "did you hear that?"
We made it home safe and sound with yet another adventure behind us.

Wednesday, August 24/2011

It was sunny all day today - too hot to be in the sun.  It was a good day to do another load of laundry (the bus washing machine has decided to work again) and have it hang out on the line.  Today it was pillow cases that required the laundry.  It will be so nice to lay our heads down on sweet smelling pillows tonight. Why I will probably think I am sleeping in the wide open spaces!!
Our neighbours came over for a visit before supper.  Dave has been busy trying to clear trails so that he can get his fishing boat back into some of the lakes that had lots of trees blown down during the last plow wind thus blocking the roads into them.,  He said that Island Lake was now open and I believe that it was the one that had the worst destruction and required heavy equipment to clear all the downed trees.  Poplar Ridge Lake is still blocked and by the sounds of it, could be for a long time yet.  It too probably needs heavy equipment to clear that trail as well.
It is nice to sit around with our Leoville friends and enjoy a few laughs and company before all going our separate ways for supper and the remainder of the evening.  There is a rather calming peace to our way of life.

Tuesday, August 23/2011

It was a quiet day today.  I finished cleaning the bus and worked in the garden.  I picked peas then pulled up the vines.  They are done for this year.  I then picked the beans and noted that there is probably another pick to be done before they too get pulled up.  Dave has asked that I save all the garden refuse for him as he hauls in out to the forest and baits the deer with it.  He is hoping to lure a nice big buck to the garden refuse so that he can shoot it in hunting season and fill his freezer.  I hope he gets one before we leave for Arizona as I would enjoy a deer steak or two!!
John had to do some maintenance on the quad today which included an oil change for both the motor and the transmission.  That being done, it was time to relax and enjoy the evening.

Monday, August 22/2011

Well, I survived the night and that is a good thing.  I am now revived and ready to go again.
It is time to clean the bus again.  I swear to God someone comes in here while I am not looking and creates a horrible mess.  I did a couple loads of wash in the bus washer before it decided it didn't want to spin them out,   so took what was left over to the laundromat to finish it off.
Our spot by the river

Nice weeds!

Marie and Garry

Marie next time take the price tag off!!
I love the smell of my uniforms when they have had the opportunity to hang out on the line to dry.
Back from the laundromat and Dave comes over to ask if we want to go fishing for a while.  Hell Yea!!
We quickly got ready and headed down to the river hoping to catch some perch for supper.
We started in one place and moved to a second place and caught nothing but weeds.  It is a good thing we brought a few refreshments with us as the second spot was so peaceful and quiet.  It provided enough shade for all of us to sit and enjoy life.
Back home, we started a campfire and eventually John cooked supper - steak and potatoes.  Mmmmm.....
What an awesome way to finish off a day.

OMG - who set that alarm to ring so early???   I feel a bit stiff and am still tired.  The old grey mare ........
I am NOT looking forward to the next 12 hours!!
Home after my shift and I am sooo tried.  Maybe I am dead and no one has told me yet!!  Is that the bed calling me??    ZZZZZ

Dave

John, Shirley and Dave

John

Dave
Quad ride day!!  Gosh,  I have not been on a quad for 3 years and look forward to the ride with both anticipation and trepidation.
I decided to wear the chest waders as I hate getting wet and it looks like it could rain.  As we rode down the North road, it did start to rain but stopped by the time we hit 8 Mile trail.
As it was, the weather turned out to be phenomenal.  It was perfect actually.  We headed over to the Chitek trails.  Dave and Shirley have never been over to these trails so it was a pleasure sharing this part of the forest with them.
We saw some wolf tracks and also some bear tracks.  I love seeing stuff like this.  It reminds one that we are trespassers in this forest and that there are creatures here that can truly cause you harm.  It is quite a thrill.
We stopped for a wiener roast in an area that overlooks the river.  On a sunny day, one can actually look into the water and see fish swimming around.  Today, it is cloudy and not as easy to see them.  They camouflage beautifully next to the bottom.
After the meal break, we started the trek home.  There are a few nasty water holes we have yet to navigate.
The water holes were much better than the last time John and I had been here.  Shirley handled her quad like a pro and had no trouble getting through all the water hazards.   She was very proud of herself and rightly so.  It was the longest ride that  Dave and Shirley had been on.
By the time we finally arrived home, it was dark and we had been on the trail for 9 hours.  It was totally awesome but man was I tired.  I dragged myself to bed, thankful to be off my tailbone (which was sore but much better than I had expected) and finally horizontal!!  ZZZZZZ.....

Friday, August 19/2011

Back to work again.  I love my job and enjoy the staff.  Once the shift is over, I head home and to my bed. I have to get all the rest I can as tomorrow is going to be a busy day.  I can hardly wait!!

beverage!

Dave coming though !

Snowmobile shelter

Heading home
Today I headed off to work and John, Dave and Gary hit the trails to "break in" our new quad.  It needs 10 hours on the engine to properly break it in.
With my 12 hour day finally over, I headed home only to find the bus door locked and no one in sight except Hogan who was looking down at me from the dash.  It is a good thing that Gary has a very loud laugh because just as I was wondering "what the heck am I going to do now", I heard him laugh and knew the boys were across the street swapping trail stories!!
Our quad has been officially broken in and we are good to go for Saturday.  I am actually looking forward to it and hope that my tail bone can handle to trail.
One bit of bad news came off the trails today.  Apparently Gary took a CV joint out of the front end of his quad so now he is out of luck for Saturday's ride.  He is in dire need of repairs.  First his truck and now his quad. Bad Luck seems to follow Gary.
Because I have to work again tomorrow, I head to bed early as the alarm clock shows no mercy.

Wednesday, August 17/2011

Today, I met the owner of the shop property over at the town office for the transfer of title.  Once this is done and our name is on the title, we will pay for the property and become the official new owners.  While over there I asked about the regulations for fencing the property.  We need to do this as I am pretty tired of worrying about Hogan getting off our property and scaring the town residents.  There is also the issue with the boy's dogs.  With an enclosed yard, there will not be any issues with any dogs that choose to visit us here in Leoville.
Our new toy

John has been wheeling and dealing on a new quad for a few days now and today is the day we are to pick up our latest toy.  We headed to Pines Motorsports in Prince Albert.   Here we picked up a two-up Can Am quad.
With the quad safely stowed in the back, we stopped at Walmart for a few necessities then headed back to Leoville.
Once at home, it had to be shown off to the neighbors and after all the oohhs and aahhs  it went into the back of the trailer for the night.  We have a quad date with Dave and Shirley for Saturday.  First, I have to work a few days at the nursing home.

Tuesday, August 16/2011

Today was a clean up day.  Casey took the Axle and whatever parts to the car wash to clean all the sand and dirt off them and out of all the little nooks and crannies it may be hiding in.  With that job done, he decided to take Tori and both dogs down to Vimy.  Here the dogs could swim and run around to their hearts content and he and Tori could just sit and relax and enjoy the wonders of the forest.
They were gone all afternoon and upon their return, said that they had met Dave and Gary and had taken Dave's quad for a bit of a run.  Casey came home with soaked shoes and was hoping to be able to dry them before he headed home.  Good Luck with that one!!  Despite the raging fire, the shoes were still wet when the kids finally headed back to Saskatoon.
I had used the slow cooker today to prepare supper so made sure the kids were fed before leaving. I tried out a new chicken recipe and it turned out quite good.  With the kids fed and watered - again - they loaded up and headed back to Saskatoon with the usual instruction to text us when they got there.
After receiving their text, it was time for me to head to bed.  It has been a busy two days.

Monday, August 15/2011

It was a busy day today with Casey moving the Sami into the shop and then proceeding to remove the rear axle and "pumpkin".  This is the part that needs repair after the last trip that John and Casey had taken on the trails.  Tori and I were the unofficial supervisors for this job!!  The two dogs just kind of hung out in the shop where it was nice and cool.
Knowing that Casey loves ribs, that is what I prepared for supper.  That along with some spanish rice and supper was ready whenever hunger struck.
We played a few games of Kaiser and I must say that Tori, who is a novice at the game, played much better than Casey!!

Saturday, August 12/2011

Well, I baked the cake today and it actually turned out pretty well.  It rose enough for me to be able to cut in in half and use lemon pie filling between the layers.  Add a nice frosting and it should be a hit!!
I picked peas today then shelled and blanched them and put them in the freezer for Shirley.  She is hoping to make a pot of borscht this week using fresh garden vegetables.  It should be good!!
John and I did some measuring in the shop today and discussed what to do and where to do it!!  There is a bit more thinking needed for this operation.
I think the first thing on our agenda is to get a fence up around the property.  With both the boys having dogs and our Hogan,  it would be a big relief not to have to worry about them when they come to visit.  This town is rather persnickety when it come to dogs running "at large".  A fence would certainly cure that problem and Hogan could have even more freedom than he has now.
Dave and Shirley came for a visit and a sit around the campfire.  Shirley picked us up a couple of  "do rags" for our heads for when we are on the trails.  They have skulls on them and I am afraid that John and I will look pretty scary when we have them on!!

Friday, August 11/2011

It has been another lovely day today. We are getting some hot weather - finally!!  John is busy wheeling a dealing on this new quad. Sounds like it is going to be a two-up Can-Am.  Red in color,  snorkeled and the radiator relocated to the front rack.  Good, now we can go into some really deep water!!  Good thing I kept my chest waders!!
I was busy today looking for a cake pan to bake Shirley's birthday cake in.  She is working today so I went over to Dave to see if she had something suitable and I must say, he has no clue as to what is in their kitchen when it comes to cake pans!!  That is such a "man" thing!!
Hoping Gary might have something better than what I found with Dave, I headed over to his kitchen and once again struck out.  What is the matter with theses men??!!  Eventually, I was forced to enter the storage trailer and search through a few boxes and did find a springform pan that would be serviceable.  Gee, I am tired before I even start!!
We had a campfire tonight and the neighbors joined us.  John told them we were buying a quad and now we are looking forward to getting out on the trails with them.  It should be fun!!

Thursday, August 10/2011

I had a few things to do in the garden today.  It is sure coming along nicely and I can almost hear the beets calling to me - time for the pickling supplies to come out!!
The cucumbers are slow but I had to re-seed them this spring so I still have high hopes for them if the hail or pounding rain storms we have had recently doesn't return for another go at them!!
Shirley's birthday is on Sunday so I am planning a bit of a party for her.  It will be a surprise to Shirley so have let Dave in on our plans.  Dave's brother Jeff is coming up for the weekend so he is invited too.  It should be fun.  I have to bake her a cake (wonder where all my cake pans are) and John will be responsible for the steak and baked potatoes.
We heard from Casey today and him and Tori are planning on coming up Sunday night as well.  They are both off Monday and Tuesday so plan on heading this way to help John with the Sami.  It needs it's rear axle taken off  and new parts ordered as it broke the last time John and Casey were out on the trails with it. They can work on it in the new "shop"!!
John is busy deciding which quad we should buy and, more importantly, which color!!

Wednesday, August 9/2011

Last day of work over and done with.  Four days in a row is a bit tiring but when I got home,  John had an awesome campfire going and the evening was quite pleasant.  We sat around it for a while enjoying a few refreshments and chatting about our plans for the recently acquired property and oh, P.S. and by the way.... should we buy a quad!!!  Wouldn't it be nice to quad with the kids again or go out on the trails with Dave and Shirley?  Well. I am not sure where this idea came from but yes it would be nice to do that again but let me think about this for a minute.  OK, lets do it!!  More decisions - Jesus!!  I guess I know what John and Hogan were looking at on the Internet while I was working - quads!!!

Tuesday, August 9/2011

Working again. 12 hour shift pretty much eats up most of the day.  One more shift and I am done for the week.

Monday, August 8/2011

Working today and I really have no life when I work!!  John and Hogan having some alone time!!

Sunday, August 7/2011

I was called in early this morning to work which is really OK as I have nothing planned for today.  I might just as well go to work and make some money - we have a property to pay for!!
Home from work and now in the groove to work three more shifts.   There truly is no rest for the wicked!!

Saturday, August 6/2011

Today, I phoned the property owner and asked if we could have another look at the property.  He wasn't home so I left a message on his answering machine.  I said not to hurry, but sometime this weekend, we would like to see inside the buildings again.  I had to chuckle because the owner was over here at the bus not 30 minutes later, ready to show us the property again.
We went over to look and by the end of our conversations,  John and I agreed to purchase the property for 1/3 the asking price.  It is a good deal and I guess we will be staying in town.  Forget the acreage thing and all the work that comes with it!!
Let the planning begin!!

Sunday, August 14/2011

It is Birthday Party Day today.  Shirley still has no clue what is being planned for her.  Jeff and Dave are taking her fishing today then coming here for supper and partying after.  She will be so surprised.
I finished icing the cake and I must say, it has turned out rather nicely.  I hope it tastes as good as it looks!!
With the return of the fishermen (or should I say fisher persons!!) the party started!!  They had had a good day on the water and did come back with several fish.  Shirley was hoping for a fish fry for supper but had to settle for steak, baked potatoes, salad and cake.  Poor Shirley!!
The cake was a hit and I thought Shirley might end up crying when we sang the Happy Birthday song to her.  She was seriously touched by our surprise.
Because Jeff had to drive back to Saskatoon, we ate early to accommodate his travel.  With supper consumed, he headed for home with a piece of birthday cake, he was too full to eat!!
Because Dave and Shirley had spent so much time on the water today, they were soon tired and headed home.  The sun can really do a number on you, especially on the water.  Besides catching fish, the high light of their day was seeing a mom bear and three cubs.  Now that would have been something to see.
Casey and Tori called and decided to drive up tonight and wanted to know if we would still be awake by the time they got here.  Of course,  the campfire was awesome and we were sure to still be up.
As it turned out, they arrived less than 2 hours later and of course I had to mention the fact that they had probably been speeding.  Not such a good idea considering all the wildlife that would be out and about at that time of night.
Tomorrow will be a busy day so it was not too long before we all headed to bed.

Friday, August 5/2011

I have realized that it actually take me a few days to recover from working a night shift.  I am really dragging my tail again today!!  Oh well, I can rest up today and tomorrow then get ready for a few shifts next week.
The weather seems to be improving but there is still the threat of severe storms.  So far, we have remained relatively unscathed here in town.
John and I have been kicking around the idea of purchasing the property adjacent to us since it was offered to us a week or so ago.  As with anything, there are pros and cons to it.  If we were to get an acreage, that would mean a ton of work and I am not so sure that is the way to go.  At this stage of my life, do I want to take all that an acreage entails or should we just buy this other property?   John could have his shop and we could fashion some sort of a "man cave" (with "cave girl" touches) from the rest of the building.  We could also have some place for storage also.  Hmmmm - think, think, think!!

After last night's rain and hail storm, I was anxious to see how the trail riders did.  Since it would be rude to wake them up this early, I headed to bed to catch a few zzzzz's!!
When I finally did hear all the gory details of the ride, I found out that the Sami is once again in need of repairs.  (Remember that ugly noise that has been coming from "somewhere" - appears to have been from the rear axle etc - sounds expensive!!)
Casey had to head back to the city today as tomorrow is a work day for him.  He is starting that Friday, Saturday, Sunday shift now.
With him and Roxy headed down the road, it is once again very quiet around the bus.
We spent a quiet evening as I am usually not very energetic after working a night shift.

Our destination for the day

Harry ( third from left )

One last mud hole then home!

John and Casey and Dave and Shirley headed out on the trail ride today. John decided to take Dave and Shirley to Harry Piche's cabin. Harry was a bit of a dubious fellow who did not get along with authority so he moved out in the forest and built his cabin. As you can see by the sign on his cabin he did not live a long life. After his death the forest service wanted to burn his cabin down, but his family buried him beside the cabin. As Harry was native this made it sacred ground and the forest service could not destroy the cabin. The cabin is open to everyone and everything is as it was when he lived there. You will often find a fresh bottle of Pilsner Beer sitting on the counter as this was his favorite and one is often left as a show of respect for Harry.
I stayed here as I have to work a night shift tonight and I know that despite the claims that they will be back before I have to go, that is most unlikely to happen!!
Instead, I went and laid down to rest and they took off.  I had cooked a couple of chickens and a whole bunch of corn on the cob for when they came home as I knew they would be hungry.
As I was walking to work, I noticed a build up of rather angry looking clouds and knew that we were going to get another rain storm.  I got to work without getting wet but not by very much time.  While I was taking report, I heard this awful pounding and when I looked outside I saw rain and hail just pounding the ground.  OMG - wonder if I have any garden left after this nonsense!!  I wondered if the trail riders were getting any of this.  It was  just nasty.  I did not realize just how much it had hailed until I let one of our residents out for his final smoke of the night and saw piles of hail stones on the ground under the eavestrough spout.  Holy Smokers!!  (to my amazement, there was still some left 12 hours later, as our Maintenance Man scooped some into a cup and put them into the freezer Thursday morning!!)

Tuesday, August 2/2011

We headed out to get some firewood today.  We might just as well make use of Casey's muscles while he is here with us.  With the truck gassed up and the new fancy chainsaw ready to go, we headed down the North grid and I was amazed to see that there were several large trees down - some of which had already been cleared off the grid by someone with a chainsaw.   Man, there must have been a hell of a wind in this area to take down trees of this size!!
With Beef's little trailer behind us, we headed down the Fire Tower Road where there has been lots of logging going on.  The loggers tend to leave lots of short trees around for scavengers such as us.   We stopped to dump the few tree branches and biodegradables out of the trailer and hear a loud  diesel engine sound coming towards us.  This turned out to be a huge logging truck heading into the bush to pick up a load of birch logs that had been left for him.  He was wondering about the upcoming bridge and the hill up the other side.  We told him that Case had come across the road the other night and although it was a bit rough, he should not have any trouble getting to where he needed to go.
With our destination just up ahead, we let both dogs run.  They seemed to have a bit of a competition between them as to who could run the fastest and  I must say that I think they are pretty even in that category.  Roxy however, tends to run directly in front of the truck,  out of sight and that can't be good!!  We had to slow down several times in order to see her - silly dog!!
It did not take us long to get a trailer full.  Casey hauled logs to the truck while John and I cut and stacked it.  On the way home, we stopped at the bridge and let the dogs swim.  Roxy is a powerful swimmer and looks like she loves being in the water.  Hogan likes it too and loves to fetch a stick.  By the end of their swim, Roxy was actually jumping into the water to get a head start on Hogan in getting the stick.  Hogan never ever jumps into the water - instead enters it with much more class!!
Once we got home, the trailer was unloaded and Casey returned it to Beef after taking it out into the ditch and sweeping out all the bark and dirt.  Dave and Shirley came over to check out the wood pile and when Casey returned, we made a game out of guessing how many swings of the axe it would take for him to split several of the logs.  Shirley was a better guesser than I was!!
John started a fire and we sat around enjoying the fruits of our labor until it was time for John to cook supper.  Steak and baked potatoes - awesome!!
It was decided that the trail ride that Casey has been waiting for would take place tomorrow.  I have decided not to go as I am working night shift tomorrow and since I know how these trail rides go, I will just stay here and rest for my upcoming shift.  Hell, these guys won't even be home by the time I head to work!!

I slept well last night knowing that Casey was home, safe and sound - once a mother, always a mother and no matter how old they get, you always worry about them.
At work, the girls were talking about the wind storm that apparently blew through town last night.  I did not hear a thing!!  The awning was still attached to the bus so it could not have blown that bad.  Surely, if the bus had been rocking and rolling, I would have woke up.  One of us would have for sure.
The wind must have been brutal though as there were reports of major damage at a resort near Big River with some pretty severe injuries to a couple of people as a result of falling trees.  There was some talk as to whether or not it was a plow wind or a tornado.  Nasty stuff but Leoville must have only caught the edge of this wind storm or believe me, there would be no awning left on the bus!!
The "troops" were sitting around the campfire when I got home again tonight and I was able to relax again surrounded by friends and family.  NICE!!
Dave had finished putting his little Sami back together and it is now sitting quite a bit higher.  He is just waitng for his new tires to arrive and he will be set.  Casey can hardly wait to take a trip out to the trails with his Dad and Dave which, could easily turn into a gong show with this bunch!!
I headed to bed while John and Casey stayed up watching TV.  I was tired and a bit cranky (hard to believe, I know).  Both John and Casey thought I was being anti-social but I didn't really care - I just wanted to go to bed (hell, I will talk to them tomorrow!!) and watch the rest of my TV program without these two losers talking through it!!  I no sooner got all settled when the door is thrown open and John, Casey and the two dogs all climb into bed with me!!  Jesus, Mary and Joseph!!  It is a good thing we have a queen sized bed!!  What a family I have - i am truly blessed.

Sunday, July 31/2011

I worked today and the day seemed to fly by.  When I got home,  John was chatting with Dave and Shirley and eventually, he started a fire.  It is nice to come home and just relax with friends and chat about their day.
Shirley had got several of the curtains made for Jace's camper.  They looked awesome.  I didn't expect her to start on them so soon as she too has been putting in extra hours at her job in Spiritwood.  I am really pleased at how they look and how they make things so much brighter in there.  Now, if Jace spends some time fixing the roof where there is an obvious leak,  the camper will look great and last for several more years.  It is just the right size for him and Kim and the Granddog of course!!
Since Casey did not come back from the lake last night, I am wondering if he will show up tonight.  Who knows with these young people these days!!
Being that I am scheduled for another day of working tomorrow, I head to bed for my much needed beauty rest!!
Just as I start dropping off to sleep, I hear Casey returning and he comes in and tells me about some of his adventures over the past two days. It sounds like he had lots of fun.  He said that the drive home was an adventure since he decided to take the Huard Lake trail over to the North Grid.  A rather daring trip by yourself, at night and in his little Sunrunner 2WD - well, no one said he was smart!!  He said the weather was getting ugly and the sky was REALLY black.  The wind was coming up too.  But, he made it home safe and sound and that is all that really matters.

Saturday, July 30/2011

Because I went to bed at a reasonable hour last night, I am up early.  The sun is shining and it should be good weather for today's rodeo.  I have absolutely nothing planned for today and that is a good thing.  I think I am still tired from all that shopping yesterday!!
Casey got up and headed over to Clearwater to spend the day (and probably the night) with the kids camping over there.  It will be quiet here tonight and that is a good thing since I have to work tomorrow.
John and I spent a quiet day here, it is sunny and warm - a good day to be alive!!
