Thursday, December 17/09

Gosh - MORE sunshine again today!! It is supposed to get to 70F today so is a good day for a motorcycle ride. John got the bike out of the trailer and polished it all up so we look sparkling going down the highway. We headed off around noon towards the Yarnell Hill. This was the curvy little mountain road we travelled down with the little truck the day the axle had it's issue. The "hill" is a 2500 foot ascent/descent that occurs in four miles. It is all divided highway for the four miles and is very curvy with several areas of shelf road. I must say that it is mostly two lanes on both sides of the highway, so the road is wide and the shelfs are not that scary. There are several 20mph curves and there is retaining wall along the route. The bike handled the curves well although it certainly does not corner like a two wheeler.
We drove through several little towns along the route and eventually came to the pass that would lead us into Prescott Az. The sign said curvy mountain grades for the next 17 miles and no vehicles over 40 feet long. This road certainly was full of curves and switchback and provided some of the nicest scenery yet. We entered into the Prescott National Forest and the smell of the pine trees was fantastic and reminded me of the trees back home. The summit was at 6100 feet and there was snow along the edge of the highway. There was a bit of evidence that a snow plow had been in recent use on the pass as there were a few areas of piled snow along the way. The mountain views were nice and we even managed to see a deer who, quickly changed his mind about crossing the road when we came around the corner. Good thing!! Once we entered Prescott, we got gas and the directions to Walmart - like I would miss an opportunity like that!! Bought a few Xmas decorations and of course had to start heading back home. Didn't really want to take the Interstate back to Wickenburg so why not return the way we had just come!!! Yeah!!! You know I love all those twisty roads with their 20mph curves and switchbacks!! Lets do it again!!! The only satisfaction I got out of doing this road forward and backwards was that John's arms were going to be sore from steering the bike around all those curves!! (Evil satisfaction - if I must say so myself!!) We stopped at the Green Frog in Congress, Az. for a beer then continued on down the road - The Yarnell Hill was still ahead!! The final descent made, we stopped at the Rancher's Bar in Wickenburg for another beer and made it back to the bus in time for Survivor!! What a life!! Another great day - fun was had by all.
