Well, it is finally here.  The day we start our journey home.  We don't have to get crazy and leave first thing in the morning as we are only travelling a few hours up the road.
The weather here in Wickenburg has been incredibly hot (by my standards) and so the final packing went rather slowly.
The man cave has been locked up and all the yard decorations, including the chairs had been locked in the shed.  The dog is in his cage, the camper door is locked and we are headed home.
Kay will be traveling with us for a week or so and has Henrietta (the side by side) nestled snugly in the trailer behind the truck.  All final checks are good and we headed down the road.
Willow Springs Road would be our first stop of the trip.  Finally, we would be out of the dry desert heat and into the Coconino Forest just south of Flagstaff.  I could hardly wait.  Although it was only a few hours from Wickenburg, it was also a few hours closer to home!!
We almost made it too.....without incident but, if you are someone that follows this blog then you will know that "without incident" is often not within our grasp!!
Since we often travel with Kay, we have had two way hand held radios with us for the "just in case" moments.  We were only a few miles from our destination when over the radio we hear Kay's voice....."I just blew a tire!!".  Now all I really heard was "blew" and "tire" so I looked at John and said, "What....her or us"?   As it turned out, we were only a mile or so from an upcoming off ramp so headed off the interstate to await Kay as she limped the trailer (with the flat) to us.  Of course there was no tire iron handy for the lug nuts so John turned on the the inverter and got the impact wrench out along with the bottle jack and had the tire changed in no time at all.   We were soon on our way to the little meadow in the forest.   The one that has caused us great grief in the past by insisting on making John drive into the soft meadow thus,  getting us stuck!!  Today though, the Gods have smiled upon us (I guess the flat tire was enough drama for today) and we found a most wonderful spot nestled in between the old growth oak trees and pine trees.  Booko was let out of his cage and we quickly set up camp.  The sun was going to be setting soon and we needed to get a campfire started before the chill of the upper elevation invaded camp.
Once we were set up, the trailer door was left open and the cats were allowed to come out and check out their new environment.  We hadn't been camping with the cats since the end of November so it usually takes a day or so for them to settle into the routine.
There was only one other camper in the meadow so we certainly had a great spot.  That camper had a dog and we soon got to know "Mr. Bing".   He was a young pup that obviously had some border collie in him as he tried on several occasions to "herd" Booko around.  Both dogs played very well together.
Evening came and the fire was lit.  We sat around enjoying the sight and sounds of the meadow while John cooked supper.   We were hoping to catch a glimpse of the herds of elk that we know frequent the area but it was not meant to be tonight.   Supper was great and we ended the evening  calling for the cats to come back into the trailer which surprising enough, they did!!   All was good with the world and Life is Good!!
