November 2/09

Today, we were in the Wyoming back country and it reminded me alot of the Montana back country. There were miles upon miles of sagebrush. This particular area has miles of sandstone cliffs, all of various colors. They are really quite breathtaking as you can see by some of the pics.
I was struck by the harshness of the countryside. I can't imagine any pioneer woman walking through the sagebrush in a long skirt!! We travelled along the various road and words such as lonely and desolute come to mind. Gosh, we hadn't seen any wildlife - not even a mouse.
We travelled about 110kms today and it wasn't until we were headed back to the motorhome that we finally spotted some wildlife. It was close to dusk and we managed to spot a couple of small herds of antelope and a herd of perhaps 20 elk. The elk certainly weren't too afraid of us as they stood fairly still while we took a few pics then, finally ran off. We also saw a few rabbits, a raven and an eagle. Other than this, not a creature was stirring!
We did come across another couple who were out in the back country that had become lost and stopped us for directions back to the highway. John told them how to get there and away they went. It still, after all these years of travelling off road with John, amazes me how he remembers how to get home. Me, I'd be lost out there forever and would end up like the two sun bleached carcasses we saw today.!!
Back at the motorhome, we had a quick supper, some TV time and off to bed. Tomorrow----more trails and adventure.
