Once we arrived, we saw the trailhead for Railroad Canyon Trail (the back way into the townsite) and decided to take that trail at some point before leaving this area.
Today though, we would head back towards camp along a different route. After several miles of travel along the gas pipeline,(which lays just on the ground) then along the Arizona Canal, we realized that the canal was probably NOT going to let us cross anytime soon so we back tracked several miles and eventually came to the road that provided a bridge across the canal.
The canal is a 541 km long diversion canal that diverts water from the Colorado River from Lake Havasu City into central and southern Arizona. It is the largest and most expensive aqueduct system in the United States and provides much needed water to the areas it serves. It is also totally fenced and allows for crossing only on designated bridges.
Of course, by this time it was getting late but, we were soon on the "right" side of the canal and on a "night" ride!! We soon dropped into the wash that ran beside our campsite and after some awesome sunset and moonlight pics, we arrived back at the camper safe and sound!!
All in all, despite the fact that John got us lost (a fact that he denies!) it was a great ride and an awesome day.
