Sunday, June 9/2013

It is raining off and on again today and the sky remains overcast and dreary.  I just spoke with Kay and it is really nice where she is in Utah.  I certainly thanked her for sharing that bit of information with me, as I got up and turned on the heaters in the bus!!
Man, it is one lousy day for a bbq at the home.  Hopefully the rain stays away.  One can still have a bbq on a dreary day but it sure sucks when it is raining.
Shirley messaged me today asking for some molasses and I thought for sure that I had some in the cupboard.  When I went to look for it, I found none.  What is with that??
I needed to deliver the buns over to the nursing home so when I was there I asked one of the girls in the kitchen if I could borrow some.  I was handed the container and left promising that I would return a full one tomorrow.
Shirley was baking bread today and wanted to do a few loaves of rye bread so that is why she needed the molasses.  She is an awesome bread maker.  I don't think she ever buys store bought bread.
After chatting with Shirley for a while I returned home and thought about doing last night's supper dishes.  Of course that didn't really appeal to me so I decided that I had to continue reading my book....I had a murder to solve!!
John eventually got up, looked outside and decided that it would be yet another day of rest.  The wood we ordered from the lumber yard on Friday still has not arrived so there would be no fence building today.  Of course in the rain, there would be no fence building even if the wood had arrived!!
Words with Friends occupied John for most of the afternoon while I sat and solved my murder case.
The dishes eventually did get done and then John and I wandered out to the man cave for a beverage while he cooked steak on the bbq.  Mmmm..... it was a nice way to finish off our day.

Saturday, June 8/2013

I awoke early to the sounds of rain on the roof.  Man, I think it has rained all night.  The garden now has plenty of moisture so hopefully now we get lots of sunshine in the next week,
It rained all day and there was nothing to do but sit in my chair and read my book.  Awesome relaxing day!!
There is supposed to be a barbeque over at the nursing home tomorrow so I hope the weather smartens up for that.  I have 6 dozen hamburger buns sitting on the kitchen table that need to go over there but have no desire to walk in the rain.  Tomorrow morning will have to do.
We decided that we need to sell a few of the vehicles we have sitting around the yard so John listed a couple on Kijiji and today a fellow came buy and bought the old blue jeep we have had for a few years.  Despite the pouring rain, the deal was made and the young fellow headed down the road with "Old Blue".   Now that is one down and four more to go!!    Woo Hoo!!
It was pizza tonight for supper and it was good...even if I do say so myself!!
Hopefully tomorrow will bring nothing but sunshine.

Friday, June 7/2013

It is raining and dreary out this morning.  Hopefully, the rain will stop and John and I will make the trip into Spiritwood for the lumber and a few other things.  In the mean time, I will check out the Facebook pages and have my coffee.
The rain did stop and John and I headed into Spiritwood.  The first stop was to get my fishing license at the local Conservation Office.  It was closed when we arrived so I will have to just go online and get it. Next we stopped in at the pawn shop to see if Shirley had any furniture that might work for the man cave.  Unfortunately, she didn't have anything at the moment.  I then headed over to the pharmacy, the hardware store and then the greenhouse.  I managed to get everything I had come for so was quite pleased about that!!
Next, we hit the lumber yard and ordered the rest of the wood we needed to complete the fence.  Hopefully, it will be delivered sometimes this weekend and we can get this darn fence done.  Of course they didn't have the wire we needed so we will have to pick that up in Saskatoon next week.
We finally headed back to Leoville and I must say that the road repairs are coming along nicely.  The road is much safer now since the huge heaves have been repaired.  I only hope that re-paving is on the agenda this summer.
Gale and Charley came over for a quick visit and picked up the tiny tim tomatoes that I pick up for her in town.
It started to rain again and we retired to the man cave.  When Gale and Charley left, Dave arrived followed by Gary and then Shirley.  We had the makings for a party.....and we did.
Several beverages later, it was time for Marie to eat.  It is a good thing that I had put a corned beef brisket into the slow cooker earlier because that is what we had for supper.  Then, I had to sleep.   Good Night!!

Thursday, June 6/2013

It rained off and on all night long and it smells absolutely wonderful this morning as I walk home from work.  It was a good night so I am thankful for that.  Most of the little lovies slept right through the night.
I am headed to bed now to catch a few winks and when I wake,  perhaps the rain will have cleared up and John and I will be able to head into Spiritwood for the fence lumber.
Unfortunately it is still threatening to rain so there is no fun in loading and unloading wood in the rain so it looks like we will have to wait until tomorrow to hit the lumber yard.
Instead, we hung out in the man cave to pass the time until supper.  One night shift, continuing to fight this lousy cold, cough and sore throat and 8 beer later, I was ready to crawl back into bed and that is exactly what I did once supper was done.  Man, it is only 9:00 p.m. and I am so done for the day!!
Good Night.
John continued to watch TV and I did not even hear him when he finally came to bed.  I was dead to the world.  Please, someone....make this cold, cough and sore throat go away!!

Wednesday, June 5/2013

I am up early and the sun is shining.  I love it when the sun greets me in the morning.  I sat and enjoyed a couple cups of coffee before  I got the text from Gale saying she was ready to get her flowers into their pots.
Hogan and I then walked over to her place and we got busy.  Man for flowers!!  Well, with the task ahead, there was nothing to do but get started and before too long, the fifty thousand were all in their places and the various pots distributed through out her property.  It will look totally awesome once they have settled into their pots and grow like crazy.  Gale loves her flowers and it so reminds me of my Mom's love for her flowers.  It is awesome that I can share this whole planting thing with Gale. It brings back lots of good memories for me.
With the flowers done, I noticed that Gale had not got her tomato plants in yet so I planted those too while I was there.  Now all her planting is done and she is happy.  The garden is all coming up too and since we planted hers before mine, hers is a few days ahead.  I think every cucumber seed grew so there will be no shortage of cucumbers for us this fall!!
Hogan and I then walked back to the bus and spent the rest of the day relaxing. I have to work night shift tonight so will save what little energy I have for then.
All to soon, it was time to get ready and head over to the nursing home.  It is a good thing I only have one night shift booked as we have lots of yard stuff to do before all the "kids" come for the father's day rally next weekend.
I am off to work........  Good night!!

Tuesday, June 4/2013

It is sunny out today and that is awesome.  I have been watering the garden as there is no rain in sight and today, I can just see the tiny plants starting to come through the soil.  Woo Hoo!!
I have to head over to the nursing home this morning to partake in some in service and then stay for a mandatory staff meeting so will be gone for at least 4 hours today.
There is a BBQ planned for lunch with pot luck salads so that will be cool.  We will eat with the residents.  That is always nice and they enjoy it too.
I was roped into helping our TLR (transfer, lift and reposition) instructor for the first few hours today as I was once a TLR instructor in Saskatoon.  She needs a second person to assist with the training session  today so asked if I would help out.  Of course I said yes so now have to get into instructor mode for a few hours.  It is always a good review though as to how NOT to hurt yourself when moving objects or residents.
The BBQ was awesome and sampling all the different salads was delicious!!  So many salads.....so little room on your plate!!  I went back for seconds, to hell with the burger!!
The mandatory meeting took two hours and I was back at the bus by 3:30.
John had spent the day rearranging stuff in the man cave and has now finally found the right place for the snakeskin and a few other things.  The stained glass Roughrider sign is now hanging in the window and actually looks awesome with the sun shining through it.  Kay certainly did good when she commissioned that piece of work for us.
The sun was still shining when I got home and it was "happy hour" so both John and I had cracked a beer and were sitting enjoying it when Gale text,  asking if I would come help her plant the 5000 flowers she had bought when her and I went shopping in Battleford last week.  WHAT!!!!  She also wondered if John could come and cut her grass.
Gale has been fighting this lousy cold and flu crap going around and has not had any energy either.  I sure know how she
Snakeskin is hung

Getting ready for Rider season

Whats a beer fridge without stickers

Marie texting Kay
feels so told her that I would come tomorrow morning to plant her flowers and John would cut the grass tomorrow as well.  My energy for today was almost spent..... I can hardly get the beer can to my lips!!
Gale and Charley came over a while later and we sat around for an hour or so chatting before they returned home then,  John and I got supper ready.  There is hockey playoffs on again tonight so an evening in front of the TV was once again on the agenda.
It wasn't long before I was in bed.  Man, will this cold and sore throat ever be gone?

Monday, June 3/2013

The sun is shining this morning and it looks like it will be a nice day for a quad ride.  It will be good to get out into the forest and see some more trails.
Our trail today
We headed down the North Road then took a trail off to the left.  We had seen this trail several times and had always passed it by.  Today, John decided to go exploring.   Of course there are always "spur" trails associated with many of the main trails and we explored some of them.  Many were dead end, one actually led us into a tree stand and bear bait area.
Wood Violet

Crossing a field of dandelions
Eventually we found the main trail and were greeted with fields of dandelions.  As you can see from the pics, the view was incredibly pretty.  Nothing but yellow and green.  The trail was actually quite awesome and at one point, the dandelions gave way to about a quarter mile of swamp.  As we traversed this, I wondered what the rest of the trail had to offer us.

John heading down the trail - I think
we will call this Dandelion Trail

more wood violets

As it turned out, this was the only swampy area we had to cross and actually if one remembered not to drive in the other guy's tracks, the crossing was uneventful.  At one refreshment stop I took the time to enjoy the numerous wood violets that were in full bloom.  There is nothing like Springtime in the forest.  It was so peaceful and quiet and if not for the sounds of the bees and the insects, there would have been no sound what so ever.
We carried on down the trail (which had now turned into a designated snowmobile trail) and eventually crossed and open field, encountered some cows and eventually were stopped by the Big River and all its surrounding marshland.  I could see why this is a snowmobile trail and not a quad trail.  There was no way that we were going any further in this direction.  There was a sign on a tree saying "Leoville 5 kms".
We turned around, travelled the few miles back to another trail and carried on.  Here we were able to access a designated wildlife area where only hunting "on foot" was allowed.  As we travelled through his area, I marvelled at the absolute beauty of our forest.
Eventually, the trail spit us out onto Gun Club Road (or 8 mile trail, whatever you want to call it) and we then headed towards the trail that would eventually take us to the Huard Lake snowmobile shelter.
Huard Lake shelter

Overlooking the lake

looking down on the quads from the shelter's deck

Forces helicopter flying by
This trail provided us with a bit of a challenge today.  Normally there are a few nasty little mud holes and water that needs to be crossed and we were not disappointed today either.  One of the nastier spots had been excavated by Mr. Beaver so there was an issue of crossing one of his "runs".  Some of these can be quite deep and require a good deal of skill to cross however, today, the run was not all that deep and both John and I crossed without incident.
We never get tired of looking at Huard Lake from the upper balcony of the shelter and today was no different.  It is beautiful there and the lake was so blue, that and the surrounding greens of the forest combine for an awesome picture.
We heard a helicopter off in the distance and knew that the sound was coming closer.  We thought it was a fire helicopter, checking the forest but once it came into view, we thought that is was perhaps a military chopper.  It was huge!!
Wolf track

Hes a big one
On leaving the shelter we had to once again cross several "wet" areas.  Some years, these spots prove to be quite challenging and a winch is often required to get to the other side.  Today, they were easily traversed and we were soon heading down the trail towards the Clearwater Grid.   It was along this trail that the tell tale signs of extreme amounts of snow showed up.  Many of the smaller pine trees were bent over into the trail because of the prolonged weight of the snow on them.  It was slow going for a while but not difficult.  One just had to slow down and move the trees as we came to them.
We made it to the grid then headed down the road towards the other side of Huard Lake.  Of course we are not ones to stay on the main trail and once we hit the Huard Lake road, veered off on another trail that would spit us out back onto the main Huard Lake Road a little further down.
It was on this little "scenic" trail that we saw the huge wolf tracks.  Wow, this was one huge beast and not one I would like to meet.  Even the size of John's hand paled in the presence of these tracks.  I put my hand down into the track and it would take one and a half of my hand's width to cover the track.  Incredible!!
Huard Lake

Huard Lake picnic area

We soon found ourselves on the other side of Huard Lake.  This is were people come to launch their boats so that they can fish for the jackfish that inhabit this awesome little lake.  There was no one here (I love quadding during the week) but there were hundreds of swallowtail butterflies.  It was awesome just sitting quietly watching them.  Spring is definitely in the air!!
Vimy Creek - the beaver dam
From Huard, we travelled to Vimy Creek and the lake.  The last time we were here, the beaver damn had been compromised by another couple of quadders so we were interested in seeing how Mr. Beaver had made his repairs.  He had indeed been busy with the repair and the flow of the water had greatly reduced however he still has some work to do.  Although the water was not flowing at anywhere near the speed that it had been, there was still a lot of it flow through the damn.
From here we decided to head down the North Road, back towards town.  I was getting tired so it was time to head home.  Both John and I would rather not,  ride the road home, so thought we might just take 8 Mile Trail over to Eddie's Trail then, access 3 Mile Trail.  This would spit us back out onto the North Road 3 miles from town and we could ride the ditch into town.  This would add at least an hour more to our day so we decided to make the decision as the which way to go once we hit 8 Mile.
As it turned out, we met Dave and Shirley just before 8 Mile so had to stop and share a refreshment with them.  They were supposed to be riding with us today but Dave started feeling ill so decided not to join us.
Meeting Dave and Shirley, decided how we were heading home.   After we finished our refreshments, it was even later in the day and most definitely time to head for town.  We kept to the Grid all the way home, meeting up with Dave and Shirley again about 1 1/2 miles from town.  They had gone to do some practise shooting when we left them the first time and now they too were headed back to town.
Back at the bus, the quads were put away and I headed to the shower.  Oh dear, that bed is sooo going to feel good tonight!!
