Sunday, June 25/2017 - Saturday, July 1/2017

Sunday brought sunshine.  Man, the garden and everything else could sure use the heat.  There is a lot of wet that needs to evaporate around here for sure.
I'm thinking that today is going to be one of those "easy" kind of days as I am scheduled to work on Monday so I had better take it easy today so that tomorrow will be easy as well.

Tired puppy
Monday arrived and my "work" day commenced.  As usual....it was a "good day at the office".  It was a bit noisy as the health district is FINALLY putting central air conditioning into the building!!  Now that is a very good thing.  It was hot in the building but the real heat has not even begun yet!!  All things considered, it was a good day and I arrived home tired but content.
Tuesday found me headed back to Evergreen for the biannual Mask Fit Testing.  This is to ensure that in the case of a "respiratory epidemic" we are covered with the proper fitting mask.  it is an important aspect of nursing and often minimized however the SARS episode showed us just how important this is.  It really did not take too terribly long so now I know the number of the respirator that is designed to give me the best protection against all those mean, nasty germs!!
John did mention to me that we would be leaving for British Columbia on Wednesday so I was busy the rest of the day getting things prepared for the trip.  There really was not much to do as all the everyday stuff was already in the trailer.  That meant that there was food to transfer from the big freezer and laundry to do.  With that being said, I had all afternoon and evening to get that done.
On Wednesday, we headed down the road.

Heading out

A bit blurry but we made it this far!!

Going through Provost

Parked for the night
We arrived at the 9 and 36 rest area for the night.  The wind had been a bit of an issue all day and by the time we finally stopped for the night, it was blowing pretty damn good.  We tucked in beside some trees and that helped a lot.  It was initially pretty noisy with all the big truck traffic but as the evening waned, so did the noise.

It was pretty windy but we tucked ourselves behind some
trees and that helped a lot!!

We were up the following morning and once again, headed down the road.  We would be at Fernie in a few hours and that would be a good thing.  We were hoping to sneak onto the airstrip and get all set up before Lorne and Marilyn knew we were there.  After all......we were crashing their Canada Day weekend party!!

Thursday's travels......

Always some nice scenery when we are headed West

The Frank Slide

Island Lake - just outside of Sparwood, BC

We arrived in Fernie and soon discovered that Wayne and Teresa had brought their trailer out earlier in the week and had scooped us on the first spot!!  Man, you just can't trust anyone these days!!
Oh well, there is plenty of room at the end of the airstrip so we parked in behind them closer to the Elk River.  Booko was in his glory.  He had miles of open land to check out and the Elk River to drink from!!  Life was pretty good for him!!

Heading down the strip

Camped by the Elk River
We met Gentry (Lorne and Marilyn's son) when we arrived and it wasn't too long before Lorne and Marilyn themselves made an appearance at the end of the airstrip.  Yes, we managed to surprise them again with our arrival.   I did mention that is was a little rude of them to plan a party and not include us in the festivities!!  We almost had Kay convinced to drive up from Utah as well.  Unfortunately, she could not get the time off.  We all decided that her boss was a real JERK although, that was not really the same word we used!!

As the sun sinks behind the surrounding mountains, the temperature drops
and the jackets are needed.

Gentry was our "cabana boy" and made sure we had enough wood
for the firepit for the week

Snow on the mountains

John running the dog.  There is a half mile of
airstrip so up and back in one mile.

Beautiful skyline
Friday brought sunshine and the promise of awesome weather.  Booko was more than happy to chill in the chair and watch the river.  The surrounding scenery was simply incredible and I sat outside with my morning coffee taking it all in.  Booko checked out down by the river and initially was a bit reluctant to go into the water but soon found his courage and played in the little "pool" of water away from the rather fast and steady flow of the Elk River.  The water level was up from the spring runoff and the current would certainly take you away rather quickly!!

incredible scenery

An awesome spot to camp

Down by the river - Booko sitting in a field of Buttercups

Booko standing "on guard".  There was a herd of
cattle across the river!!
Friday, found us headed into Fernie for some supplies and of course we had to stop at The Fernie bar for a cold one.  The weather was hot and the beer was cold so all was well with the world here in BC!!

Taking the back way into Fernie

Not sure where the bear came from - stuffed animal perhaps!!

Back road into Fernie

The Three Sisters

Having a beer at "The Fernie Hotel"

Wayne and Teresa arrived on Friday along with Walter and Heather.  The party had begun!!  We had no fancy menu planned for the weekend so that was a good thing.  The hotdogs came out on Friday night and it was burgers and salad on Saturday.   Sunday, we went all out and had steak, baked potatoes and salad.  Other than that, it was an assortment of beer, wine and coolers for  the rest of the weekend.

Great company and great scenery
Lots of fun and laughter
It was an awesome weekend and we divided our time between sitting at the river and gathering around the campfire.  It was great!!

Jim and Bonnie came out for a day and it was great to see them again.  They are a nice couple and now we are invited for a swim and happy hour at their place!!

Photo of all us girls. Now that is a whole pile of fun right there
Booko chillin by the river
Saturday brought us on the the 150th celebration of confederation.  It dawned bright and early and it wasn't too long before Heather brought out all the decorations and we commenced to party!!  Happy Birthday Canada!!    Who says the "Old Folks" can't party!!

Heather, Marie and Marilyn with out fancy socks that say
"If you can read this" (on one foot) "Bring me a beer (on the other)!!
WE ROCKED OUR SOCKS!!

Fun was DEFINITELY had by all!!      Happy Birthday Canada........Life is Good!!
